Diverse-Cast Version of “Death of a Salesman” at RCC through March 5
Recognizing 100 years of the genius of Arthur Miller, Roxbury Repertory Theater (RRT) is presenting his highly acclaimed masterpiece, Death Of A Salesman, at Roxbury Community College from February 25 through March 5. Under the direction of Prospectus artist Robbie McCauley (More SUGAR), “we journey with the travelling salesman as he nears the end of his life, while he struggles to keep his family, his job and himself from unraveling because of his past transgressions.”
According to Obie Award-winner McCauley, “The American Dream is no longer dreamed in black-and-white. As I thought about this work, which Miller prophetically wrote at the dawn of the post-World War II boom of the white middle class, I was looking to cast the struggle of Willy Loman from a different, black American perspective. As the project evolved, it became clear that the dissipation of the white American Dream in an emerging America of color adds new texture to Miller’s masterpiece.”
A majority of blacks (55%) and Hispanics (52%) still believe in the American Dream, compared to a minority of whites (35%), according to a CNN/Kaiser Family Foundation Poll (Aug-Oct 2015).
“The America Dream is the quintessential sales pitch Americans have bought since our nation began,” says Marshall Hughes, Director of Fine, Performing and Media Arts and Managing Director of Roxbury Repertory Theatre. “Is it alive, or dying, or changing? In an election year, we’re now bombarded with new versions of it. In some ways, we share an American Dream across raees; in other ways, our dreams couldn’t be more different. Since our society is our dreams, it’s a topic worthy of reflection.”
Last year, McCauley directed a critically successful, diverse-cast production of Tennessee William’s Glass Menagerie at the college with RRT.
Roxbury Repertory Theater, established in 2005, is a theater company of Roxbury Community College. The founders sought to build a company made of non-union artists, performers, and technicians who could bring their unique backgrounds and new opinions to the theater. This collaboration of talent resulted in an organization formed with individuals of diverse ages, races, and experiences that extends the presence of the College’s Media Arts Center into Greater Boston and the surrounding communities.
