McLaurin and Berrigan Works in New Art Center Exhibition
Through November 22, New Art Center presents the exhibition, Obstacle Course, which includes work by Caitlin Berrigan and Cathy McLaurin, two artists who participated in Prospectus artist Alfredo Jaar’s Public Interventions. According to the New Art Center, Obstacle Course “performs, examines and critiques collaboration in contemporary art making. In the included works, artists and viewers alike advise, adapt, demand, play, teach, listen and translate. With drawing, sculpture, photography, video, writing, and performance, the exhibition complicates utopian ideas about working together, and instead examines the offerings and challenges of collaborative and delegated making.
“The exhibition grew out of many discussions about the social and political complications of working with people who are not artists. Drawn to the lively exchange of making collaborative or participatory art, many artists find that creating this work is fraught with issues of access, power, and compromise. Placing process before product, Obstacle Course opens an honest and revealing dialogue about the intricacies and ethics of working together.”
Other artists whose work is presented in the exhibition are Tal Gafny, Alyssa Carson,
Ghana ThinkTank, Courtney McClellan, Nicola Singh, Joanna Tam and Garett Yahn.
The New Art Center is located at 61 Washington Park, Newtonville. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1-6 p.m., and by appointment.
