Mel Chin and Operation Paydirt Featured in NY Times

On March 19, 2014, The New York Times published an in-depth article about Prospectus artist Mel Chin (Operation Paydirt in New England + Neurotoxic Element Music Video) and his Operation Paydirt in the context of his 2014 retrospective exhibition in New Orleans, Mel Chin: Rematch. The article, titled “Exhibition Traces a Career Dedicated to Mutability” and written by Dorothy Spears, begins with these paragraphs:

“ELIMINATING lead poisoning from the lives of children is not a typical goal of art. But for Mel Chin, the borders of art have long extended past the crafting of discrete objects.

“’I like this idea of unexpected relationships,’” said Mr. Chin, 62, who, with the greater good in mind, has spent 40 years obliterating boundaries between science, education, politics and, perhaps most pointedly, people.

“To Mr. Chin, art is not essentially visual nor about the selling of an idea. ‘It’s about delivering a reality that affects the future of individuals,’ he said in a recent interview.”

This is great media exposure for Mel and Operation Paydirt as they continue to work toward the remediation of lead-contaminated soils in New Orleans and in inner cities across the country!
