Two Out-of-Town Exhibitions for Wendy Jacob

Work by Prospectus artist Wendy Jacob (Personal Kingdom) currently can be seen in an exhibition in Toronto, and was featured in an exhibition that closed July 31.

On view through October 10 at University of Toronto Art Centre, Toronto, “The Flesh of the World” exhibition is “inspired by the 2015 XVII Pan American and Parapan American Games and the work of the philosopher of phenomenology, Maurice Merleau-Ponty…”The Flesh of the World” is an exhibition presenting diverse and complex views of the body that might deepen qualities typically associated with competitive sports and games, such as the relationship between the body and technology, and how the senses might offer new forms of knowledge to corporeal performance and potential. “The Flesh of the World” will push the limits of the body and challenge dominant culture’s understanding of normativity and embodiment through work by Canadian and international artists who use the body as a medium.”

Wendy’s contribution to the exhibition is Waves and Signs (Basketball), a 2015 installation consisting of a wooden platform engineered to carry vibration, performers and a video projection. “Concealed behind the wooden platform are four large, electro-mechanical transducers and two power amps. The transducers are firmly attached to supporting studs and carry vibrational signals through the platform’s surface. During the opening, the floor [was] activated by live performers. At all other times, it will be activated by video feed. The performers are two basketball players who dribble and pass a basketball between them. A microphone captures the vibrations of the ball as it comes in contact with the floor. The sounds/vibrations are carried to the floor. By standing on it, visitors can ‘hear’ the ball in play through their bodies.”

Other artists whose work can be seen in this exhibition are: Katherine Araniello, Ingrid Bachmann, Mowry Baden, Louise Bourgeois, Lisa Bufano and Jason Tschantré, Raphaëlle de Groot, Arseli Dokumaci, Helen Dowling, Lindsay Fisher, Erin Gee, Ann Hamilton, Sara Hendren, Martin Kersels, Noemi Lakmaier, Tim Lee, Darrin Martin, Bruce Nauman, Carmen Papalia, Catherine Richards, Stelarc, Alexa Wright, Aaron Williamson, and Artur Zmijewski.

“Art of the Lived Experiment” was on view through July 31 at three locations in Grand Rapids, MI. “The exhibition featured the work of more than 19 internationally renowned disability artists….” and [brought] together a range of artworks, including sculpture, video, painting, drawing, photography, ceramics and performance by US and international artists, many showing for the first time in this country.” Wendy’s exhibited work for this exhibition was her installation, Waves and Signs (Balloon).
