Leonard/Campos-Pons Installation Part of Documenta 14 in Greece
Matanzas Sound Map (2017) by Prospectus artists Neil Leonard and Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons is on view through Sunday, July 16, at the Nikos Kessanlis Exhibition Hall, Athens School of Fine Arts, Pireos 256, Athens, as part of the international art exhibition Documenta 14, which for the first time this year is split between Kassel, Germany, and Athens, Greece.
The installation, comprised of 10-channel audio, projected video, cast glass, blown glass, handmade paper, coconut tree bark, coconuts shells and stone, explores the sonic landscape of Matanzas, Cuba, from the harbor neighborhoods where iconic musical forms were born to remote estuaries where one imagines Cuba as it sounded before human intervention. The installation creates an aural cartography made in collaboration with sugar growers, musicians, musicologists and scientists.
Additionally, Matanzas, a 12” vinyl LP of compositions by Leonard incorporating electronics and field recordings, will be released in May. The compositions were created during his Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Residency in Captiva, FL, with field recordings from Cuba made in 2016 for the Matanzas Sound Map installation.
